I'm Nobody's Girlfriend: fanmix (non-icons)

Kate Austen is one of the passengers of Oceanic Flight 815, which crashed on September 22, 2004 on an unknown island in the Pacific. The first time we as viewers meet her, she's wandering through the jungle, rubbing her wrists as she happens upon a bleeding man who asks her to sew up his wound--which she does, despite telling him that she's worried she'll throw up on him. She volunteers to go on a mission to find out what happened to the fuselage of the plane, and even after she and Jack (the bleeding guy she helped sew up) and Charlie (another passenger) encounter God knows WHAT out there and she's scared to death, she counts to five and sucks it up and tries to go find Jack.

And then we discover that she's a criminal.

This is the extremely abbreviated version of Kate's back story. The thing is, you could go the easy route and boil down her story to her relationships with Jack and Sawyer (the Southern con man who she has an acknowledged connection with), but really, she is so much more than that. Kate's not their prize to be won; she's her own person with her own goals. She cares about her fellow survivors, especially Claire (she helps deliver her son, Aaron, and Claire and Aaron are an integral part of Kate's arc), and will fight for those she cares about. She's brave, reckless, morally gray, crazy fascinating, and one of my favorite characters on a show full of all sorts of interesting people.

I made this for waywardmixes, and I hope you enjoy it.

Mary Jane's Last Dance, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
She grew up in an Indiana town
Had a good lookin' mama who never was around
But she grew up tall and she grew up right
With them Indiana boys on an Indiana night
Well she moved down here at the age of eighteen
She blew the boys away, it was more than they'd seen
I was introduced and we both started groovin'
She said, "I dig you baby, but I got to keep movin'
On, keep movin' on."
Last dance with Mary Jane
One more time to kill the pain
I feel summer creepin' in and I'm
Tired of this town again.

Criminal, Fiona Apple
Heaven help me for the way I am
Save me from these evil deeds before I get them done
I know tomorrow brings the consequence at hand
But I keep living this day like the next will never come.

The Loving Kind, Girls Aloud
Oh baby, if you find
I'm not the loving kind
I'll buy you flowers
I'll pour you wine
Do anything to change your mind
I know you may be disinclined
To find the love we've left behind
So kiss me then make up your mind
I'm not the loving kind.

Modern Love, Matt Nathanson
And the bright light shines
And we ache and we break and we try
Stage light shines
And they blind our eyes
To it all
Still we ache and we break and we just can't get it right
This modern love is not enough
She said, "Watch your back, I'm nobody's girlfriend."

Here Comes Your Man, The Pixies
Outside there's a boxcar waiting
Outisde the family store
Out by the fire breathing
Outside we wait 'til face turns blue
I know the nervous walking
I know the dirty beard hangs
Out by the boxcar waiting
Take me away to nowhere plains
There is a wait so long (so long, so long)
You never wait so long.

Dog Days Are Over, Florence + the Machine
Happiness, hit her like a train on a track
Coming towards her, stuck still, no turning back
She hid around corners and she hid under beds
She killed it with kisses and from it she fled
With every bubble she sank with a drink
And washed it away down the kitchen sink.

Rescued, Jack's Mannequin
I can hear it
A jet engine
Through the center of the storm
And I'm thinking I'd
Prefer not be rescued.

God Put a Smile Upon Your Face, Coldplay
Now, when you work it out, I'm worse than you
Yeah, when you work it out, I wanted to
Now, when you work out where to draw the line
Your guess is as good as mine
Where do we go, nobody knows
Don't ever say you're on your way down when
God gave you style and gave you grace
And put a smile upon your face.

Amie, Damien Rice
I'm not a miracle, and you're not a saint
Just another soldier on the road to nowhere.

Re: song choice: as much as I wanted to put "Born to Run" on it, I opted not to because A.) one of the Kate-centric episodes on Lost is titled that and B.) I'm pretty sure that it's been used plenty of times in prior Kate (or Kate/Sawyer) mixes. Snatches of lyrics or general song sentiment reigned supreme for me, which is why you've got Girls Aloud (I think it sort of speaks to Kate's romantic relationships, in that she's not really able to really commit) up against Tom Petty (her restlessness and need to keep moving because of the criminal aspect and all; plus, the ideal Midwestern girl theme--even though it's the wrong state) and so on. "Dog Days" and "Here Comes Your Man" both feel like big, dread-filled songs, which is really pertinent to Kate and the rest of the characters in seasons five and six, so I had to leave them on there.

That's all!

Oh, Lost nostalgia, come to me, bb. The mix looks great, and I do mean, absolutely stunning. XD Thank you for sharing!

Edit to say 'The Loving Kind' links to 'Rescued'.
Thank you for the comment, and for telling me about the link. It's fixed now.
This mix is excellent. Criminal is perfect for Kate. So is Mary Jane's Last Dance. Okay, all the songs are perfect lol. Now I have LOST nostalgia. I need to do a re-watch.

This makes me want to re-watch Lost. I loved Kate when I was watching, but I never really followed it in order, so it never grabbed hold of me the way it probably would have.

I also love your texture use in the artwork!
I don't know much about Lost, but I thought your mix was great and really worked with your explanation of the character. And your artwork is absolutely stunning.
This is incredible (even though I only ever saw the first season of Lost). The art in particular stands out to me ♥
Oh man, these songs all look perfect for her, and your cover art is beautiful! Definitely snagging this one. :D
